"The Distinguished Service Magnum Stainless" - This was a great find - this Model 681 is a more rare fixed-sight version of the classic 686. This particular Smith & Wesson was the carry gun of a police captain - which is to say that the only gun in the department shot less was the chiefs. I picked up this beauty with original box and papers - it had only been fired four times for annual qualification. Not any more. Great shooter!
With the full underlug and beefed up forcing cone - two signatures of the Smith & Wesson L-frame - this gun can shoot full-house magnums all day, every day for years. The low profile of the fixed sights made this an ideal police weapon. The picture model above was the carry gun of a police captain, who barely fired it.
